Love, Loss, and Legacy: Why End-of-Life Sessions Matter
Recently, I was in conversation with someone about scheduling a session for her elderly pooches. We were discussing the perfect time and location to capture their bond when, suddenly, one of her pups passed away before we could meet. It was devastating news, and it’s one of the reasons I feel so strongly about writing this blog series.
If you’re reading this, it means your don't just want portraits of your pup—you need it. Deep down, you understand how fleeting our time with them can be. That’s why I don’t charge a session fee for these experiences. Don’t wait. Schedule a session while you still can, before "someday" becomes "too late."
Too often, we only think of preserving these memories when the vet delivers a difficult diagnosis or when we start to notice changes in our pet's health. But the truth is, every stage of their life is worth honouring. The quiet wisdom of a senior animal, the love in their eyes, and the way they still light up for their favourite treat or toy—these are moments you’ll treasure forever.
Sessions with senior dogs are a little different, and that’s exactly how it should be. Older pets may move a little slower, but they deserve every bit of care and consideration. We’ll work entirely at their pace, ensuring they’re as comfortable and happy as possible.
If they feel like resting instead of posing, that’s absolutely fine. I focus on capturing candid moments—those little gestures and glances that truly reflect who they are. This isn’t about creating perfectly posed portraits; it’s about honouring the unique connection you share.
While my work often focuses on stunning wall pieces, I understand that having a large portrait on display might feel too painful for some after losing a pet. Albums and folio boxes are beautiful alternatives. They allow you to revisit the memories when you’re ready, keeping them close but not overwhelming.
This is the first of what will be a series on celebrating and remembering senior dogs. Each post will explore different aspects of this difficult but unique journey. My hope is to encourage you to embrace the time you have now and to help you honour their legacy in a way that feels right for you.
In the next part of the series, I’ll be interviewing Rowan Phill Armstrong, a grief coach and the founder of Balanced Life Coaching. Rowan will share insights and advice on navigating the emotions that come with losing a beloved companion. It’s a conversation I hope will provide comfort and guidance during such a challenging time.
Don’t wait. Celebrate the bond you share while you can, and let me help you create memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
